CCPL News : Director's Remarks at Public
Budget Hearing
Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2006
The following are remarks from CCPL Director Emily
Ferren:
Public libraries are life long learning and education.
Public libraries are cornerstones of economic development.
Public libraries are valuable to our communities.
When the Maryland State Department of Education conducted the Potomac
study surveying Maryland residents about libraries, 95% responded they
wanted a public library in their neighborhoods.
Library cards connect you to information resources. On-line, we are
open 24/7; with valid databases and ASK US NOW reference service.
We are in the business of providing information to all---infants,
toddlers, pre-school, school age, young adults, middle-aged adults and
seniors.
We serve not only all ages but also those with disabilities, varying
income levels, and cultures---we serve a diverse and growing population.
As I stand here today, I represent 70,000 registered borrowers in
Charles County with library cards, a staff dedicated to providing
information, and trustees committed to an excellent library system.
We’ve been proactive with both a Citizens group and a Foundation.
We need the monetary support of the Charles County Commissioners.
In closing, the library actively participated in preparing a DVD
through the leadership of the Annie E. Casey Foundation as part of a
community opportunity, Leadership in Action. The DVD is entitled
“Learning Begins at Birth” and, may I add, learning never
ends. Our libraries are life long learning.
Please notice the materials in the video clip----public library books.
Parents are a child’s first teacher. We join in helping parents
learn along with their children.
We are asking you, as our elected officials, to partner with us to grow
our public library services and respond to the information needs in our
community.
Thank you.
