What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
National Hispanic Heritage Month occurs every year in the United States between September 15th to October 15th. Hispanic Heritage Month is a 30-day period that celebrates the achievements of famous Hispanic Americans, as well as Latino culture in general. Hispanic Heritage Month was originally started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johson as a weeklong event to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded Hispanic Heritage Week to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15. The celebration starts on September 15th, as this is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries.
