The Caribbean consists of a series of archipelagos and islands throughout the Caribbean Sea called the West Indies. According to Britannica, there are three major subdivisions within the West Indies: the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the more isolated islands that rest on both the North American and South American continental shelves. Despite not being geographically within the Caribbean Sea, Bermuda is also often linked to the West Indies through common cultural and historical ties.

The Taste of Sugar by Marisel Vera

In June, we commemorate National Caribbean Heritage Month. During this month, we celebrate the diversity that our Caribbean brothers and sisters bring to our country. It is estimated that the Caribbean-American population of the United States is almost 13.2 million (June 2018 Census data). The vast majority of our Caribbean brothers and sisters come from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, along with other smaller islands like Trinidad and Tobago and the Bahamas. In this blog, we highlight some short stories and novels that share the folklore, history, and magic of these islands and their people. These stories portray lives, struggles, and joys all with the energy and flavor that characterize life in the Caribbean.

Jamaica

Short Stories – How to Love a Jamaican
