<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Write a novel in a month?” you question, inquisitively. “Impossible!” you declare, declaratively. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Well, not totally,” we reply…counterintuitively.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Zora Neale Hurston wrote “Their Eyes Were Watching God” in just seven weeks. Okay, a little more than a month, but still, an incredible book in an incredibly short length of time.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But still not fast enough for you?  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Well, what if we told you that Jack Kerouac wrote “On the Road” in just three weeks—that’s less than a month! It is said that Kerouac taped sheets of paper together into a long strip so he didn’t have to stop typing to reload his typewriter. You know, that thing people wrote on that came long after papyrus and shortly before computers.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“But November is already here,” you say.  And at the time of your reading this very blog, there might not even be a whole month left.  Well, how about this, friend? Paulo Coelho wrote “The Alchemist”&#8211;yes, a book translated into over 80 different languages that has sold over 65 million copies worldwide–in just two weeks! That’s two (2) weeks, 14 days, one entire fortnight!</span></p>

The typical length goal set for a traditional novel is </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">50,000 words. </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yikes!</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">That is a </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">lot </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">of words in not a lot of time. But if you break it down into smaller daily or weekly goals, it feels a heck of a lot more achievable! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But if that 50k word count is stressing you out just imagining it, it is not a hard limit on how much or how little you can write during NaNoWriMo!! Some authors go for a shorter “Novella” length of between 17.5k and 40k, or even focus on making one or a few short stories in that time! It’s all about focusing on a single creative project and setting a goal that feels attainable to </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">you. </span></i></p>

Think of it like a long road trip. You can have an end destination in mind, even plug it into your GPS to keep you on the right track, but there’s nothing stopping you from exploring along the way! You might find story elements or scenes you want to explore or new characters to add to your party, and heck, your destination might even change along the way. You can step off this path whenever and wherever you like, but starting with some goals in mind can help you focus your story and create more interesting character growth if you have a rough idea of where you want your story to go!</span></p>

You could run through a few writing challenges or short prompts to get you started for the day, even if they’re silly and have nothing to do with your larger piece. The beauty of NaNoWriMo is that the challenge is self-imposed. There’s no one hanging over your shoulder telling you how or what to write! So have fun with it! <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO) is upon us, and millions of people will be sitting down in front of their computers, doing their best to pop out a 50,000 word novel in just thirty days. The experience can be both liberating and daunting. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Although it is not required nor expected to reach the 50,000 word count by the end of November, it is easy to lose steam and inspiration before the 30th comes. To keep that motivation going, here are a few examples you can do to keep calm and carry on.</span></p>
<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">“</span></i><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you write 10k a day, you will end up with a book. If you write 1k a day, you will end up with a book. If you write 500 words every Tuesday, you will end up with a book.  If you write 100 words before bed, or 50 whenever you can, you will end up with a book.”</span></i></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Skip around in your story and write the scenes that give you the most motivation. Some authors build their entire story around that single scene. Once that scene is down on paper, you’ll have a better idea of when/where/what/how your story gets to that part. </span></p>

<p><i> </i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Accept your first draft will be bad, and that’s okay! The point of NANOWRIMO isn’t to craft the next Great American Classic, it’s to </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">write.</span></i></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-40"><h3><b>Don’t delete! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As part of the ‘write it first, edit it second’ suggestion, deleting is editing. Not just misspelled words or grammatical errors, but don’t delete the obvious plot holes, the awkward dialogue, or the character who is supposed to be dead in this scene. Every bit of writing, good or bad, is a journey to becoming a better writer. Instead put your writing in another folder to look back upon, to study, or to reflect. As author Cecil Atkins put it, “Nothing you write is ever wasted.”</span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-41"><h3><b>Celebrate your accomplishments! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As American author William Zinsser said, “Writing is hard work.” On top of writing an average 1,600 words per day to meet the NANOWRIMO deadline, authors will still have to contend with work, school, kids, and other daily activities. Don’t beat yourself up for what you </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">didn’t </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">write. Instead pat yourself on the back for what you were able to achieve. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Writing is hard work!</span></i></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-42"><h3><b>Discipline is better than motivation! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Motivation is a fickle thing, it’ll come and go as it pleases. Don’t rely on motivation. Instead, set up a schedule and stick to it. Just like getting up and going to work every day, even on days when you don’t want to, making an effort to write every day is a discipline you will need to master.</span></p>

Writing 50,000 words before the end of the month will take a lot of hard work and you may have to push yourself at times, but don’t forget your health comes first! Don’t forget to eat, sleep, and drink plenty of water! Stand up, stretch, unclench your jaw, spend time outside, and take breaks. Your writing will still be there when you come back.</span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-44"><h3><b>Change it up! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Got writer’s block? Try changing up your font, your writing instruments, or even your writing space. A change of pace can act as a breath of fresh air and give you the extra push to break through your block. (This author occasionally swaps out their black keyboard for a candy-colored one that is very satisfying to type on).</span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-45"><h3><b>Have your own cheerleading squad!</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some writers prefer to go in it alone, however having someone to back you up, whether they’re cheering you on or making sure you stay on schedule, may be exactly what you need. Batman may be the ultimate lone vigilante, but he still has Alfred, Robin, Commissioner Gordon and many others rooting for him every step of the way. </span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-46"><h3><b>Writing exercises! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your brain is a muscle. Just like a professional runner who needs to get ready for their 500 yard dash, you too need to </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">stretch.</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Spend at least 10-15 minutes before you begin on your novel with writing exercises to help loosen you up. </span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-47"><h3><b>Read!</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Reading is an integral part of writing. Reading different stories by different authors will improve your writing skills, even if you do not apply everything you’ve read into your writing. Just like an artist going to the Smithsonian to see Monet and Van Gogh, you too must read and grow. </span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-48"><h3><b>Use the Rubber Duck Method!</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In programming, whenever the programmer finds themselves stuck, they speak out loud their process step-by-step to a rubber duck. In doing so helps the programmer figure out where they went wrong. If you ever find yourself stuck in your story, speak out loud (to yourself or a rubber duck) to find out where you may have written yourself into a corner. </span></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-49"><h3><b>Don’t forget to have fun! </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">NANOWRIMO can be intensely stressful, but keep in mind your goal is to write; not to finish, not to create a perfectly written story, not to be in competition with others. This is an experience, so go have fun!</span></p>

<p><b><i>National Novel Writing Month</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, or </span><b><i>NaNoWriMo</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, occurs every November and encourages participants to write a total of 50,000 words before the end of the month. Sounds like a lot of words? It is! 50,000 words is the average minimum for when a story is marketed as a novel rather than a novella. The average Adult Fiction novel can fall into a range of 70,000 to 90,000, though it can also be more or less depending on the genre.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Does NaNoWriMo expect you to write a complete, perfect story in one month? No! But NaNoWriMo is where perfectly messy drafts can be born, and it is open to all, from the veteran author to the first time amateur. The only real requirement is to write.</span></p>

<p><b><i>Plotters </i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">are meticulous storytellers. Before they begin, they know exactly what plot points they want to hit and where they want the story to go. </span><b><i>Pantsers</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, by definition, fly by the seat of their pants. These writers dive straight into the story and go with the flow, ready to let the writing be the captain and just go along for the ride. In more recent years, a combination of these two has shown up: </span><b><i>Plantsers</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. These writers generally have some sort of plan, but they’re also open to seeing where the story wants to take them.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Writing 50,000 words in a month is hard. There’s a reason there’s a whole challenge devoted to it! But through years of commiserating and community during NaNoWriMo, participants have found many ways to help keep themselves on track.</span></p>
<p><b><i>Word Sprints</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are a popular method within the writing community. A word sprint is setting a timer and just focusing on writing in a concentrated burst during a short period of time. Word sprints can be anywhere from just a few minutes to maybe even twenty minutes! Focusing in short spurts and just getting the words out without overthinking them takes perfectionism out of the way and helps hone concentration. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another similar method is </span><b><i>word crawls</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Where word sprints are short, concentrated bursts, word crawls are like marathons and obstacle courses. The internet is full of word crawls, where essentially you are doing a variety of different writing tasks to keep things short and interesting while still slowly raising your word count. These can be timed writing for five minutes, or try to write with your eyes closed, or take your time and just write 100 words. For people who love the successful feeling of crossing an item off a To-Do List, this method works great!</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dedicated to the Queens &amp; Princesses, the integral communication between us as women and young ladies&#8230; I wrote this collection of poetry to give our blooming youth of little women something to ponder upon during their life’s journeys, as well as to speak to mature women to embrace the treasured privilege we have in teaching them. Whether you will need to laugh, to cry, to smile or to vent, I hope that there is something each of you can draw upon, relate to, become comforted by, or to even be inspired. I was asked, “Why did you choose the title: From Roses to Sparrows?” Well…roses have always been my favorite blossom, but the title didn’t really come into fruition until one of my “little sisters” started to call me Rose. She said it matched my mothering, nurturing and sweet side. This same “little sister” I had earlier nicknamed Sparrow. So this book, these expressions, stems from a friendship between a Rose and a Sparrow. I have many “little sisters” that I pray for on a daily basis to embrace the window of maturity and become beautiful women, spiritual women, and respected women. I know life lands us in many puddles and takes us through different courses, but I don’t want you to ever give up on yourselves, but especially and more importantly…on life. We, each of us, are all someone’s Rose and/or Sparrow and, at times, I feel we need to be reminded of such.</span></p>

Also among my favorite poets and writers are none other than Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Dudley Randall, William Shakespeare, and Walter Dean Myers. I have been awarded for my poetry throughout my school years, including the esteemed Dudley Randall Poetry Award, presented by The Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing in 1997. &#8220;Hate&#8221; was the award winning literary work and was signed by Gwendolyn herself. WHAT AN HONOR! This poem will be featured in my 3rd poetry book volume: Love to Love what Love can Be. Once an aspiring author, I am now living my passion, proud of my first published and released book, From Roses to Sparrows. Life may be like a box of chocolates, but at least you can enjoy some of the flavors!</span></p>

She is currently a Director at a Preschool Center servicing children from ages 1 to 5. Since high school she has gained her educational background in Child Development and Early Education. She has received her Bachelor of Science at Bowie State University in Child and Adolescent Studies. This new endeavor was an organic process. During the beginning of the pandemic, it allowed Kristian to think of new ways to express her passion for children and how to impact them physically while intellectually. Covid-19 has graced her in a disruptive way to write her first children’s book. It is her exertion to show children how to cope and thrive in the new environment Covid-19 has created for us all.</span></p>
