Blues Music has a special significance to African American culture due to its origination from the experiences of African Americans in the 1800’s. It was a creative use of expression to respond to the oppression, struggle, and resistance that was the reality of African American life within that time period. These artists used their voices to not only display their own humanity but, also provide affirmation within a time of strong adversity. If you listen closely, you’ll find that blues music can depict so many different stories within each song, including themes of social injustice, false accusations, poor working conditions, and many more struggles of the time. During International Blues Music Day, we challenge you to immerse yourself in the world of Blues Music and discover the true impact this genre has had within African American culture.
August 3rd is International Blues Music Day!
Break out your saxophones! Bring your guitars! And make sure you don’t forget the bass! Because the first weekend in August is dedicated to the Blues!
