We are proud to partner with Charles County Public Schools in providing all students access to special CCPL library card accounts. These virtual cards give students access to books, digital resources, and more for FREE! These cards are linked to student ID numbers and are valid until the student turns 18 years old.

How does my child get a card?

On April 7, 2022, all current CCPS students* were enrolled in the CCPL library card system. After that date, new students will be provided a CCPL virtual card upon enrollment in a CCPS school. Student information is shared with the library on a quarterly basis, so there may be a delay for new students as your cards are added to our system.

*If you returned the opt-out letter to your child’s school, then they have not been granted a virtual card account at CCPL. Please contact your student’s School Media Specialist if you would like your student to have a Virtual CCPS Card.

What does the card give my child access to?

These virtual cards have a checkout limit of 15 physical items, including books, audiobooks, and DVDs. These cards also grant access to all CCPL digital resources, including ebooks, eMagazines, music, movies, Tumblebooks, and databases, plus much, much more! There is no charge for the cards or for use of any of these resources.

To log in to CCPL digital resources with this virtual card, simply use the prefix CCPS followed by your student ID number. Your password is the first letter of your last name, the first letter of your first name, and the first letter of your middle name, followed by your four-digit birth year.

For example, a student named Jane Marie Smith, born in 2011, whose student ID number is 123456.

CCPS Card #: CCPS123456

Password: sjm2011

If you do not have a middle name, please use the first letter of your last name, the first letter of your first name, followed by your four-digit birth year.

Are there overdue fines for materials checked out with this card?

No, we no longer charge overdue fines for any library account. This card also does not incur charges for lost or damaged items, but it is still important to return all library materials so that others will be able to enjoy them.

When does the card expire?

CCPS virtual cards expire on 12/31 of the year the student turns 18 years old. But don’t worry, after that time your child can then register for a full service CCPL library card.

Can items from other area library systems be checked out on this card?

Virtual CCPS Cards may be used to check out items in Calvert or St. Mary’s counties, but please note that checkout limits may vary.

My child is a CCPS student and already has a CCPL library card, what do I do?

If your child is under the age of 18, and still a CCPS student, their library card accounts can be merged. Visit your local library branch and speak to a staff member for assistance. These virtual cards will be the only kids card library card available for CCPS students.

Non-CCPS students are eligible for a Library Card for Minors, a Kids Card, or a full service CCPL card with parent permission. More information on the types of library cards we offer can be found here.

What is the difference between this card and other library cards offered by CCPL?

The main difference is that this card is automatically given to all CCPS students* and connected to their student ID numbers. There is no need to have a physical card or remember a long barcode number to access library resources or check out books.

*If you returned the opt-out letter to your child’s school, then they have not been granted a virtual card account at CCPL. Please contact your student’s School Media Specialist if you would like your student to have a Virtual CCPS Card.

Can my child get a physical library card for this account?

No, this is a virtual-only card. Your child’s CCPS student ID serves as their library card account number as well, so there is no need to have a physical card. However, here is a paper downloadable version.

If you have any questions regarding the virtual CCPS student cards, please contact library staff, or Dedra Van Gelder at dvangelder[at]ccboe[dot]com or 301.934.7414.
