If you are a fan of cats, you have found the right documentary to watch over the summer. Meet the Cats of Malta, a documentary that features the island’s cats, and the people who take care of them.
Malta is an island in Southern Europe, situated in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Italy. Historically, it was ruled by the Romans, Turkish, English, French, the Knights of St. John, and now, cats. Yes, 500,000 people currently live in Malta, but so do 100,000 felines.
Malta loves its cats, as noted by the bronze statues of the feline companions or the ones that are being restored by artists like Matthew Pandolfino for the “Cat Park,” or, the number of “feeders” that live in the city. This documentary features vignettes of the most prolific advocates for the cats; Roza, Karmen, Nikki, Michelle, Salvu, and Isaac. Each feeder tends to their own colony and makes it their goal to make sure the sick cats are tended to, the cats they trap are neutered, and that some are housed to help with the population, all important tasks to keep generations of these Maltese felines safe.
As an animal lover myself, I really enjoyed this documentary. It is lighthearted, informative, and how can you not look at all these beautiful cats? I really commend each “feeder” for their years of dedication to helping these cats, as well as their honesty towards how much they have to do to keep up with the population of ferals as well as navigating the ever-changing infrastructure of Malta. I hope that they receive more support for years to come.
I hope you enjoy this documentary as well, and please share in the comments, or with library staff, what your favorite cat was in this documentary? Mine is named Nannu.
