As you may know, June celebrates LGBTQIAP+ history and our identifying family members and friends! There are so many excellent books currently being published in the Young Adult genre, and we think it’s only fitting that we give these stories and fantastic characters the spotlight! (But I promise you, you don’t need to be a teen to enjoy the tremendous prose, compelling characters, and diverse perspectives!) Some are specifically about queerness, and for others, queerness is just one part of the author’s intersectional identity. And as many readers know, we love to see ourselves in the books we read! A great book will resonate with us as we empathize with the protagonist’s struggles and triumphs and encourage us to step into their shoes and see the world from their viewpoint.
So in honor of Pride Month and as a nod to the year that Same-Sex Marriage became legal in the United States, here are 15 books that center on the LGBTQIAP+ experience. And whether they are a lighthearted romance or a punch right in the feels, we know that you’ll find a favorite (or ten!)!

Arden Grey by Ray Stoeve🌈
An insightful, raw YA novel about a young photographer navigating toxic relationships and how they influence her identity
Sixteen-year-old Arden Grey is struggling. Her mother has left their family, her father and her younger brother won’t talk about it, and a classmate, Tanner, keeps harassing her about her sexuality—which isn’t even public. (She knows she likes girls romantically, but she thinks she might be asexual.) At least she’s got her love of film photography and her best and only friend, Jamie, to help her cope. Then Jamie, who is trans, starts dating Caroline, and suddenly he isn’t so reliable. Arden’s insecurity about their friendship grows. She starts to wonder if she’s jealous or if Jamie’s relationship with Caroline is somehow unhealthy—and it makes her reconsider how much of her relationship with her absent mom wasn’t okay, too. Filled with big emotions, first loves, and characters navigating toxic relationships, Ray Stoeve’s honest and nuanced novel is about finding your place in the world and seeking out the love and community that you deserve.
Omens Bite by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
Something wicked this way comes…
Twin sisters, Mercy and Hunter are witches, direct descendants of the Goode family, the founders of their town. After the murder of their mother at the hands of a foul demon, they have become the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds–ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and the darkest of creatures exist.
Grief has taken a terrible toll on the twins. Rather than bringing them together, their sadness has torn them apart, driving Mercy to attempt to save the crumbling Gates without her twin and Hunter into the arms of a dangerous goddess. While Mercy looks for aid from Khenti, Guardian of the Egyptian Underworld, Hunter begins to realize the goddess she’s allied with is more monster than deity. She needs her sister’s help, but Mercy is beyond her reach on an adventure that could cost them everything, including their world.

Cold: A Novel by Mariko Tamaki🌈
A boy, a murder, a girl, a secret. From award-winning author Mariko Tamaki comes Cold, a haunting YA novel about a shocking crime, told by a boy who died―and a girl who wants to know why.
Who was Todd Mayer, and why don’t any of his fellow students at Albright Academy seem to know, or want to say, anything about him?
Todd Mayer is dead. Now a ghost, hovering over his body, recently discovered in a snow covered park, naked and frozen. As detectives investigate Todd’s homicide, talking to the very people linked to the events leading to his death, Todd replays the choice that led him to his end.
Georgia didn’t know Todd. But ever since she heard about his death, she can’t stop thinking about him. Maybe because they’re both outcasts at their school, or because they’re both queer. Maybe because the story of Todd people keep telling feels like a lot of fake stories Georgia has heard people tell. Plus Georgia has a feeling she’s seen Todd somewhere before, somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be.
Told through the voices of Todd in his afterlife and Georgia as she uncovers the truth behind his death, Cold is an immersive, emotional, and provocative read.
