It’s February, winter, AND THE BIRDS ARE HUNGRY!!! You’d be too if you had to scratch at the frozen ground just to scrounge up a meal. Well, let’s make it easier for them. Afterall, it’s National Bird-Feeding Month, and what better way to celebrate than with some resources from your friends at CCPL. And just like actual birdseed, we’ve got a smorgasbord of avian related resources for you to pick through for inspiration.
First, we’ll start with a resource from CreativeBug that shows you how to create your own dangling bird feeder with some cookie cutters, some ribbon (not white), some birdseed, and a few other common household ingredients. We follow that up with a few guides on how to build your own bird feeders if you’re so inclined. And we finish off the list with a couple of books that will help you identify the new feathered friends you’ll be sure to make.
Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief, to “eat like a bird” is actually to eat 1/4 to 1/2 times one’s body weight a day! That’s a lot of food for such tiny creatures, so let’s get feeding.
Pro tip: Place a feeder by a window, grab some binos, and you can go birding from the comfort and warmth of your own home.
Of course, if you’d like to get out and do some birding in an ambulatory fashion, that’s great too! Bring a guidebook along: it’s a great way to get some exercise, fresh air, and learn more about wild birds. After all, feeding and learning about wild birds is what National Bird-feeding Month is all about.
