We may be at the end of September, but it’s not too late to celebrate Happy Cat Month! Of course if you ask your cat, they’ll probably tell you EVERY month should be Happy Cat Month, filled with comfortable pillows to lounge on, birds and squirrels to chase, and a food bowl that never empties. But since most readers (probably) aren’t cats, we’ll focus on the actual celebration!

So what is Happy Cat Month?  Back in 2015, a non-profit organization called The CATalyst Council set out to inform and educate people about the importance of cats. They wanted to make sure everyone knew that cats were wonderful pets that were affectionate and needed human care just like any other pet. They thought this was very important because, according to their website, 42.7 million U.S. households have cats as pets. Some even have multiple cats in their house, as there are approximately 62 million cats owned as pets in the U.S. In fact, 50% of all pets adopted in the U.S. are cats. With so many cat owners out there, it’s important that we know as much about our furry friends as possible, so that we are able to ensure they can remain happy and healthy! To celebrate Happy Cat Month, here are 10 facts about cats that you might not know!

  • A house cat’s genome (the complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism) is made up of 95.6 percent tiger, and they share many behaviors with their jungle ancestors! These behaviors include scent marking by scratching, prey play, prey stalking, pouncing, chinning, and urine marking.
  • Cats have 230 bones, while humans only have 206.
  • Cats use their whiskers to “feel” the world around them in an effort to determine which small spaces they can fit into. A cat’s whiskers are generally about the same width as its body. (This is why you should never, EVER cut their whiskers.)
  • Cats’ purring may be a self-soothing behavior, since they make this noise when they’re ill or distressed, as well as when they’re happy.
  • Kneading — which some people refer to as “making biscuits” — is a sign of contentment and happiness. Cats knead their mothers when they are nursing to stimulate the let-down of milk.
  • Meowing is a behavior that cats developed exclusively to communicate with people.
  • A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995! Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect.
  • Studies suggest that domesticated cats first appeared around 3600 B.C.
  • Two hundred feral cats prowl the park at Disneyland, doing their part to control rodents (Not the costumed ones, of course).
  • Certain cats go crazy for foods you wouldn’t expect, like olives and potato chips.
