Greetings! We’d like to introduce you to “sisters” Butterscotch (a blond Golden Doodle) and Penny (a reddish Irish Doodle). Butterscotch and Penny are both therapy dogs certified through Pets on Wheels. They regularly attend the Cute & Courteous Canines program at the La Plata Branch Library (on the first Thursday of the month from 10:45 – 11:45 AM September – May) as well as the Paws to Read programs at each of the branches (where kids and kids at heart can read to a dog)! You may browse all library programs and events on the CCPL Calendar of Events.

Here is a typical day in the life of Butterscotch and Penny (composed by their human mom, Carrie, since they are still working on their sentence structure and grammar).
Good morning! The sun has risen, so it is time for us to stretch. We are waiting for our human parents (Carrie and Rob) to prepare for our daily 2-mile walk around the neighborhood. We scramble down the stairs wagging our tails and wondering who we will see on our walk. There are so many people and dogs to see, not to mention squirrels, rabbits, and deer. We especially love to greet the children who are waiting at the bus stop, and we happily provide kisses to get their school day started off right.

As soon as we get home, we have breakfast (all that walking and socializing makes us hungry)! Our humans feed us twice a day – breakfast and dinner. We try our best (and have excellent luck) earning other treats throughout the rest of the day. We are so excited today because our humans are brushing our coats and our teeth. Could this be a sign that we may have a work assignment? We volunteer with Pets on Wheels, where we visit the community (schools, libraries, retirement homes, and hospitals, to name a few). We love these visits since we meet so many nice people. The tummy rubs and head pats are the best part of these visits. Mom is dressing us in our blue Pets on Wheels working vests, and that means we have a visit today – HOORAY!. Next, we jump in the car and wonder where we will be visiting.
We arrive at the La Plata Library (one of our favorite locations). We are wagging our tails nonstop as we enter the library to participate in the Cute & Courteous Canines program that takes place between story time sessions so there are lots of kids! We have so much fun and we meet so many children and adults who are very friendly and happy to see DOGS in their library (and we must say we are very adorable and have nice soft fur).
Next we head out for a few errands at some of the local businesses that allow dogs and then it’s home sweet home for some play time in our backyard. Mom and Dad will throw our toys as far as they can and if we return them (sometimes we get distracted by SQUIRRELS) we may get a treat!
After a bit of quiet rest time and a nice dinner it is time for our evening walk. Sometimes we walk to Laurel Springs Park and other times around the neighborhood where we may get to see Tabitha, Tessa, and Tillie the mini Goldendoodles, Wison and Cole the Labradors, Chance the Corgi, or maybe someone we haven’t met before!

After such a busy day we like to settle down and snuggle with mom and dad. Wonder what fun tomorrow will bring? We hope to see you sometime at the library!
