There are thousands of museums worldwide and millions of art works contained within. Each piece deserving of its place, however some artworks are more universally known than others. Here we will explore just a few of the most famous and well known artworks We will learn about all 25 in our Art Exploration program.
The Water Lily Pond
We start off with an honorable mention by Claude Monet. Monet’s Water Lily paintings are a favorite of many with their soft colors and impressionist style. The Water Lily Pond was painted in 1899. The painting is of an actual bridge he built on his land.
The Great Wave Off Kanagawa
This one does not make the top 25 list but it is one of my favorites and deserves honorable mention. It was completed by the Japanese artist known as Hokusai between 1829 and 1833 using a woodblock print method.
The Starry Night at #2
The Starry Night is widely known and has been featured in many movies and has been made into many different adaptations. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889. Van Gogh was an artist who only ever sold one painting and experienced great hardship however today his artworks are priceless and bring joy to all who view them.
The Arnolfini Portrait at #6
The Arnolfini Portrait is a 1434 oil painting by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck. This painting is unique in that it forms a full-length double portrait with the cleave use of a mirror within a painting. The portrait is believed to be the Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife.
Girl with a Pearl Earring at #7
The painting Girl with a Pearl Earring dated 1665 is widely known by its name however it only became known by that name toward the end of the 20th century. The painting is wrapped in mystery as well as the artist, Johannes Vermeer. Details such as education and even his exact birth date are not completely known.
Luncheon Of The Boating Party at #11
The Luncheon of the Boating Party was painted by French impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881.
American Gothic at #18
American Gothic was painted by Grant Wood in 1930. Wood was known for his intriguing paintings of the American Midwest.
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at #19
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is Georges Seurat’s most famous work. It took roughly 2 years to complete finishing in 1886. The painting is done in the pointillism style and comprises many tiny dots of color.
Nighthawks at #22
Edward Hopper was an American realist painter best known for his artworks that conveyed a sense of isolation. His painting Nighthawks was completed in 1942 and shows a quiet city scene.
