This was announced on Friday, April 30, 2004 at Staff Appreciation Day. The purpose of the foundation is to establish a long lasting legacy and tribute to those who have advocated for Charles County Public Library.
Here are some excerpts from the Newcomb and Hart families on the day of the announcement:
Kittie Newcomb was well known as an advocate for the public library system. John and his family thank you for sharing this day with them and to remember today is a day to celebrate the life of Kittie Newcomb, a gifted and caring individual who touched thousands along the way.
Most of all Elizabeth Hart was involved with people. She never met a stranger and everyone she met became a friend as far as she was concerned. That’s why she enjoyed her work at the library so very much. We, her family, believe that many lives were improved because of her involvement. She left all of us a legacy to be involved in life.
The Newcomb-Hart Library Foundation, Inc. became officially incorporated on October 29, 2004. The organizational meeting for the foundation was held on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at the La Plata branch. The principle will establish an endowment (income derived from donations) for the Charles County Public Library. The interest will be used to provide programs and services, otherwise unavailable with tax dollars. In cases of capital building projects, funding will be used to complete technology projects, purchase materials, or add furnishings or equipment.
