Cookie Trivia is a simple but engaging passive program that encourages library literacy and conversation.
The Inspiration
I was inspired by another librarian in the state who offers Cookie Chess. The teens play chess with the librarian for a chance to win a cookie. I’m not a chess player, but I loved the idea of giving away cookies. From there, Cookie Trivia was born. Every month we get about 20-40 teens (many repeat customers) who want to play Cookie Trivia.
How it Works
Teens approach a staff member and let them know they would like to play Cookie Trivia. As staffing permits, we will look up a question from our spreadsheet of trivia questions. Each question usually requires four or five answers. For example, what are five foods used to make sushi? Each participant has five minutes to answer the question. The use of library resources is strongly encouraged, but they can also ask a friend. We ask participants to cite their sources and tell us about how they found the answer.
