Doctor Who: The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who by Paul Cornell and Jimmy Broxton

This special issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who sees the Doctor flung into our universe, where he meets a twelve-year-old girl who is a fan of his show.  The Doctor must figure out how to deal with being a fictional character while also fighting monsters.

The Doctor says: “The TARDIS gets transported to our universe and the 11th Doctor meets a girl who is a big fan of the Doctor Who TV show.  The 11th Doctor himself even ends up meeting Matt Smith, the actor of the 11th Doctor.  Things are very timey-wimey.”

Lois Lane and the Friendship Challenge by Grace Ellis

Lois Lane is sure that her new video channel will go viral, but, when it does not, she decides to take on the #FriendshipChallenge.  But seeking fame is drawing her attention away from her friends.  Is Lois willing to give up on her friends to gain more views?

Skylan B. says: “Thirteen-year-old Lois Lane is trying to be a viral video channel on VidMe.  But she only gets two views a week (thanks to her mom and her biggest fan GothamGirl25).  When the #FriendshipChallenge comes on, Lois figures this is her time to shine.  But when the fireworks for the challenge go missing, and her best friend Kristen quits their friendship, will Lois have to stop living in the clouds and face her challenges IRL?”

Unplugged and Unpopular by Mat Heagerty

When Erin Song loses her phone privileges, she suddenly becomes aware that an alien race is trying to take over the world.  Only those not glued to their screens can see the aliens!  Now Erin will have to team up with her grandmother to save everyone.

Ms. Faith says: “This was a cute, easy read for anyone looking to unplug and find the real world waiting out there waiting.  Hopefully you, unlike our main hero, will only find the beauty that you are missing, and not aliens.  But, if you do find aliens, this book should also serve as a guidebook to defeating them.  Also, there are some great pointers at the end, if you do unplug and find yourself questioning why you did such a thing.  Lastly, when you are finished reading this book, please flip to the very last page…it’s not over!”

Shuri: Wakanda Forever by Nnedi Okorafor and Vita Ayala

T’Challa heads into space on a top-secret mission, but, when he loses contact with Wakanda, Shuri is faced with a choice: become the Black Panther once again, or resist the calls of her people.  Determined to find out what happened to her brother, Shuri teams up with a host of other superheroes, including Groot, Rocket, and Storm!

Ms. Krysta says: “When her brother T’Challa goes missing in space, Shuri is called to take up the mantle of the Black Panther and lead Wakanda. Shuri, however, is not so sure that is what she wants.  As the Ancient Future, she will travel into space and across the globe to defend her country, but in her own way.  A powerful story full of action and adventure, that also sympathetically explores what it means to find one’s own path.  A must-read for fans of Shuri, as well as anyone who loves a thrilling superhero story.”

City of Secrets by Victoria Ying

In the city of Oskars, orphan Ever Barnes hides in the Switchboard Operating Facility, the place his father gave his life to protect.  Ever guards a secret–he just doesn’t know what it is.  But a threatened invasion means he will have to find new allies to help him make sense of the past and save the future.

Ms. Krysta says: “Orphan Ever Barnes guards a secret in the heart of the Switchboard Operating Facility, a puzzle-like building that features giant cogs, hidden staircases, and surprise trapdoors.  When his city is threatened by a foreign power, he will have to evade spy rings and trained killers in order to unlock the secret and save the inhabitants. This steampunk adventure will delight readers who enjoy fantastical worlds, a hint of intrigue, and plenty of danger.  Recommended for fans of Amulet.”
