Audiobooks are a great way to enjoy books during the summer months, they’re especially handy for long family road trips, spending long afternoons at the pool, trips to Starbucks, or as a backtrack to your gaming session. Plus, they totally count towards your summer learning challenge goals (which, if you haven’t already, sign up here! Go on! What are you waiting for??)

Here’s some awesome reasons why you should totally check out some audiobooks to add to your summer playlist.

  • Enjoyment – This one’s pretty obvious, but Audiobooks can be a really fun and enjoyable way to experience a book. They can be a great way to relax and unwind during the summer months. I love to play a book on my speakers while I lounge in my pool… even if I do end up falling asleep sometimes.

  • Full-Cast Narration – Speaking of enjoyment, there are also a ton of full-cast recordings out there that give your audiobooks a whole new flavor. One of my personal favorites is the full cast recording of Neil Gaimans and Sir Terry Pratchet’s Good Omens, which features the voices of the cast from the show! It’s definitely worth a listen, especially with season 2 coming out this month! There’s also a lot of stories with multiple protagonists that have a narrator for each POV character, which just makes keeping the storylines straight that much easier. It’s super cool to hear so much voice talent, and if you’re not sure you’ll like it, try a sample first!

  • Convenience – Audiobooks are crazy convenient, especially because you can get most of them on your phone! If you’re on the go a ton this summer, and feel like you’re too busy to even think about reading, pop over to the Libby app and do a quick search for some of your favorite genres or authors. You can try out samples of books or just click, download, and go!

  • Multitasking – If your bedroom is starting to look like a dumpster fire, the dog needs to go for a walk, AND you have that project you’ve been meaning to do, audiobooks let you multitask while you read. No longer do you have to be confined to the armchair or the desk just to dive into your favorite books! It’s great to have a book on in the background while doing other stuff, especially if, like me, you find it way easier to focus while listening to video essays on youtube or podcasts.

  • Summer Reading – Do you have books on your school summer reading list that just sound a bit blah, or maybe you can’t bring yourself to focus on the page whenever you sit down to read them? Lots of classic lit have tons of awesome audio adaptations, and reading along with an audiobook can help the words stick a little better in your brain.Listening to a book can even help you better understand the story and characters. If you check out your school’s reading list, you might be able to find an audiobook version through the library! We have titles like Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, Half A Yellow Sun, The Distance Between Us and a ton of other titles that just might be on your list!

  • Access – If you aren’t a fan of page reading, struggle to read physical books, or just don’t have an easy way of getting to your library this summer, then Audiobooks make reading more accessible! They can also help with your reading comprehension, especially if you have a learning disability, struggle with reading, or just have an auditory learning style.

Overall, audiobooks are a great option for anyone who wants to enjoy books during the busy summer months in a convenient and enjoyable way. Whether you pick up a book on CD from your local CCPL Branch, or download a new book from Libby, we love to see you get out there and get reading!
