Truly Tyler by Terri Libenson
Tyler has been hanging out with Emmie and the art crowd more, but his basketball friends are making fun of him. Meanwhile, Emmie, who is still crushing on Tyler, is wondering whether his friends think she is cool enough to be with him. Should she change her look and ditch her old friends? Why can’t middle school ever be easy? Book five in the Emmie & Friends series.
Ms. Krysta says: “Terri Libenson expertly captures the trials and tribulations of the middle school experience once again. Tyler loves basketball and art, but sometimes it seems like his friends and family only want him to think about sports. He will need to reflect on what he values in life, and whether he is ready to announce to everyone that he’s more than just a basketball guy. Libenson’s sense of humor, as well as her sensitivity to what it feels like to be growing up and finding one’s self, shine through in this latest installment in the Emmie & Friends series.”
White Bird by R. J. Palacio
In this graphic novel from the author of Wonder, Julian’s Grandmère tells the story of her youth growing up in Nazi-occupied France.
Ms. Faith says: “This is an excellent book that shouts a reminder that when we forget the past we are doomed to repeat it. Beautifully illustrated, White Bird tells a fictional story of a real time in history full of tragedy and heartbreak, while urging us to take a stand for what we believe in. But, don’t stop when the story is over, please. There are many pages of back-matter that should be read and taken very seriously.”
Miles Morales: Shock Waves by Justin A. Reynolds & Pablo Leon

Then a classmate’s dad goes missing. Can Miles help his new friend find her dad, support his family’s fundraiser for Puerto Rico, and turn in his art project on time?
Ms. Krysta says: “Miles Morales: Shock Waves is the perfect introduction to Brooklyn’s new Spider-Man. A fast-paced plot, bold illustrations, and plenty of humor blend to create a story readers will not want to put down. The best part? The ending leaves room for a sequel.”
Bolivar by Sean Rubin
No one notices that Bolivar is a T-rex in New York City. No one except his neighbor. Then a parking ticket sends Bolivar on an exciting adventure through the city. Is it time to let all his neighbors see who he truly is?
Ms. Faith says: “Bolivar is a super cute graphic novel about a dinosaur who lives in NYC and goes unnoticed until his curious little neighbor starts to make a big deal about him. Bolivar’s life turns into mayhem until that same peculiar neighbor helps to save the day…and his reputation. A very cute story with amazing illustrations.”
